ABC/Heidi Gutman(NEW YORK) — Ready to fill in the blanks? Match Game returns for its third season tonight on ABC, with Alec Baldwin as its hilarious host.
Each week, the show, a reboot of the 1960s game show of the same name, features four contestants who are asked to fill in the blanks of humorous sentences. They score points if their answers match those of six celebrity panelists. They’re all vying for a $25,000 prize.
For Baldwin, the fun comes not only from the LOL-worthy improv skills of the celebrity guests, but from the often-baffling answers from the contestants.
“My style is to try to cajole the contestants, when possible, into a sense of security and comfort, and then just crack ’em when they give a really dumb answer,” Baldwin tells ABC Radio, unapologetically. “I mean, they just deserve to be humiliated, ’cause sometimes the answers are unbelievable.”
He adds, “It’s like the comedy equivalent or the logic equivalent of ‘Two plus two equals…?’ You know, you just really lay it out for them and they’re like, ‘Um…nine?’”
It’s all in good fun, though. Baldwin admits that all the lights and cameras could cause the average person’s brain to freeze.
Tonight’s premiere episode features celebrity panelists Joel McHale, Niecy Nash, Mark Duplass, Caroline Rhea, Jason Ritter and Constance Zimmer. It airs at 10 p.m. ET on ABC.
